SQL - Installing Management Tools fails!

Another version of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 has been detected on this system that must be updated to SP1. Please update all Visual Studio 2008 installations to SP1 level, by visiting Microsoft Update.

I am trying to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Management tools to manage my Citrix DB. I have a clean, brand new VM, and have never installed Visual Studio 2008. Also, every Microsoft update is already installed. So what now? Microsoft says get the SP via Microsoft Update (which does not work). Also, downloading and trying to install the SP results in an error saying Visual Studio is not installed.

The solution is in a couple registry keys that look for SP1 installed. Correcting the below registry entries should fix your issue.

If you have a 64-bit computer:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DevDiv\VC\Servicing\9.0
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DevDiv\VC\Servicing\9.0\RED\1033
Make sure the SP and SPIndex values are 1 and that the SPName is SP1

Also correct the below registry keys:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\DevDiv\VS\Servicing\9.0
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\DevDiv\VS\Servicing\9.0\VSR\1033
Make sure the SP and SPIndex values are 1, and the SPName value is SP1.

After that, close and reopen your SQL install, and you should be good to go.
